We usually stay at Santo Tomas but last year, we booked at the last minute and Son Bou was the best of the available resorts. We was pleasantly surprised, so much so that we are going back to Son Bou again this year.

Although Son Bou Gardens has hundreds of apartments, because they are spaced out with plenty of mature palm trees between them, it is not crowded. The apartments are very clean and well laid out. The kitchen has everything you need including a microwave, although the cooker is very basic (This seems to be the norm in Minorca). The grounds are beautifully maintained.

Son Bou has a bit more life than Santo Tomas. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to eat out in, including a number of Chinese restaurants. A few do 'All you can eat buffets' for about 10-15 euros.

The nightlife in Son Bou is many and varied. There are a few nightclubs, but we stick to the bars. The Club San Jaime in the complex has entertainment every night which is thoroughly enjoyable. Most places open until about midnight.

The beach at Son Bou is the largest on the island with the furthest end towards Santo Tomas prodiminantly nudist. The Son Bou end has the usual bars, pedollos, sunchairs, etc. It also has lifeguards and being relatively shallow is excellent for kids.

Minorca itself is an absolute jewel. To enjoy it fully, you really need a car. A week in September costs about £125-£150 for a reasonable size car with air-conditioning. Shop around for the best deals. We book before we go and pick one up at the airport. Petrol is about 75% UK price.

Driving in Minorca is a piece of cake. Basicly one road through the middle with roads of to the resorts. You really cannot get lost. The roads are quiet. Even Mahon and Cuidedella, although busier, are easy to negociate.

There are dozens of beaches to visit. Our favourite is Cala Galdana(I think the Bounty advert was filmed there but not sure). Others worth a mention are Arenal de Castille, Calan Porter, Santo Tomas and, if you enjoy walking or a white knuckle car ride, Maccarella. If you enjoy walking, there are loads of routes all over the island(Booklets can be found in shops or try the internet).

Shopping on Minorca is good. Use the supermarkets in Mahon and Cuidedella rather than in the resort(Much cheaper and greater variety) Minorcans like fresh food. The quality, price and vast variety are excellent. Fish and meat are particularly good. Fruit and veg may not look like we are used to(Not all the same shape and colour) but taste much better. Shopping for gifts, clothes etc is reasonable too. Mahon and Cuidedella have good shopping centres and markets twice a week. Tacky shops in the resorts are few and far between

To sum up. If you are looking for an action packed holiday with nonstop entertainment, you will not like Minorca. If you enjoy quiet holidays, lazing on the beach, a bit of exploring, eating out and a bit of evening entertainment you cannot do much better than Minorca and Son Bou Gardens is an excellent base. Do a little research on the internet before you go and you will enjoy it more.
