| Sorrento Review: | | Written by Trevor Brooks on 13 Jul 2004 about a trip in Jun 2004.
| If you have not yet booked your holiday please learn by my mistake.Whilst not wanting to make a general criticism of the whole area I found that being located in
Sant Agnello was not convenient for access to Sorrento town.Although we were only a 15 minute walk away our
hotel was on the main road and due to the heavy traffic
you are not doing your lungs a favour. You can ofcourse get the bus but due to the congestion and air conditioning not being on we were obliged to jump ship half way there. The best way is to get the train in as this takes only a couple of minutes.OK you may have to wait for a slightly late train but it's well worth it.
Maybe this resort is best kept for the low season when things are not so busy.
Sorrento is marvellous with plenty of places to eat or drink.A must is the Marina Grande- a charming little harbour with some nice restaurants.Do not confuse this with the Marina Piccolo which is actually the bigger of the two despite translating to the small marina. The Marino Piccolo is where you will get boats to the likes of Capri,Ishcia,Amalfi,Positano and Naples.
Do try to arrange trips yourself.Much cheaper than the tour reps.Don't let them rush you into booking their trips.Pompeii for example is an easy half hour train ride away and is quite cheap.Herculaneum is only a few stations further on.It is 10 Euro's into Pompeii itself but if you intend to go to Herculaneum you can buy a ticket for both at Pompeii at a reduced cost.
Try to get to Naples itself. You can go by train or boat. It's the same train as the one for Pompeii as there is only the one line in and out of Sorrento. If you get the train you will find an information office just a few metres in where you can obtain a map.Alternatively, if you get the boat you will find tourist info in the harbour.Go to San Elmo Castle...that's the one right on top of the hill.An easy train , furnicular and bus ride awy.The views are a wonderful 360 degree panoramic view....plus it's free as long as you do not want to see exhibits.Should you have opted for thr hour long train trip in by way of return, all buses, metros and furniculars are included in the cost of your day return.
Enjoy. |
