...and so it was that I have nicknamed Straf, which opened in December 2003, Stalag Straf. The resemblance to a workcamp is not entirely inappropriate. I was there in early May 2004 and the double room I was given had bare concrete walls and floor, not unlike some carparks I know, but at a much higher price. Indeed the design minimalism has allowed the architects to exclude backs from all seating, baths from all bathrooms, even the usual little touches like tissues in the bathroom. In fact they have left out most things you would associate with comfort, unless your ideal is to squat on a stool at your workstation or just go to sleep. There is nowhere in your room just to relax! This is 'la bella figura' gone crazy - form dominates function - and for me demonstrates just how wrong some architectrs can be.
Visiting on business, I was nonetheless struck by the metal and concrete design of the reception area, with its qua-zen garden sculpture. I recommend anybody to pop in and have a look and a drink in the bar, but I said 'pop in' not 'check in'.
Mind you, the staff, clad from head to toe in dark brown, could not have been nicer, but they are stuck with it. If you do decided to stay there, don't forget to bring your black clothing, the camouflage being worn by vitually all the other guests.
