As usual we booked direct with the hotel, in this case the Suncrest Hotel Qawra.

Our family is my wife and myself, and 3 children ages 14,12,5.

We booked our holiday direct with the hotel and paid in full in advance. So with some concern on our arrival that they only had us down for b&b even though our emails and the rate paid was for full board. Sorted that but then had to sort it again mid first week as our midday meals were apparrently only to be taken from the buffet and not from the table menus. Annoying to say the least as our midday meal ticket vouchers were for LM5.00 each but the table menues which had things like burgers for the kids were only LM2.90 which we were expected to pay for. We refused this as the value of our vouchers were for LM22.50 for all five of us but the value of food to be charged from the menues was only around LM12.00 in total. We got what we wanted following proving the point, but this should not have been necessary! On the meal vouchers point, the hotel should be like others and provide guests with a coloured elastic wrist band so that staff could see what board level you were instead of taking vouchers from you before you were allowed to eat.

Malta is a place we have visted before so we know it well, and this part of the island was our preferred location this time as it is quieter than the Eastern end near Valletta.

The hotel: Well located with a few minutes walk of local shops and ten minutes walk from Bugibba and the bus station to all other parts of the island. The hotel staff were exceptional, courteous, helpful, and very polite ( all except one which we complained about ) all spoke fluent english. Very clean and welcoming reception area with a very secure customer/guest safe for valuables facility.

The food spoilt you for choice, the dining area was somewhat chaotic most of the time and some of the dining areas advertised were not open during our stay which was dissappointing as we went in first two weeks of May. The dining area itself along with other parts of the hotel were very dated and tired and in need of a full refurb to bring it up to date.

Nightlife:was non-existant apart from a noisy club 4 days a week on the ground floor that resonated through your pillow until the small hours.

The rooms: another area where time has passed this hotel by. They are in need of a major refurb, we had to have the beds changed as they had sunk so much it was like sleeping in a hollowed out tree trunk.

The pool:

The hotel claims to have the longest pool slide on the island. This pool area looks quite nice in pictures, but that is where the attraction ends. This pool area had many broken pool side tiles, the floor of the pools were dirty, and the "white edging stones" were a dull and dirty grey. There was also a large play area boat which at the time of arriving had not seen a lick of paint in years.

Our recomendations:

We understand whilst we were at The Suncrest Hotel that a new CEO had been brought in to run the hotel. He is a frenchman we understand used to be there some years ago in a lesser position. Credit where due, he was always about in the day showing workmen things to be done and there was a near frenzy of work being done. Trouble is, you only get one chance to make a first impression and for us that time passed the moment we first saw the pool area.

For us this hotel is not worth a second visit, most hotels will shut down for at least part of the low season to renovate and maintain without the need to inconvenience guests while it is being done. For us to revisit The Suncrest Hotel, we would need a video footage to view first, for us the chance of the first impression passed the moment we walked in on 2nd may 2006
