Tsokkos Gardens Apartments: Lovely apartments, cannot be faulted on anything. by Collette Doyle |
| Posted 17 June 2008 about a visit in June 2008 | Overall rating: 8.7 |
We arrived at the Sun Gardens Apartments at 6am having being delayed 9 hours from dublin. We checked in very quickly due to the efficiency of the reception staff. The rooms were spotless. Twin room with plenty of wardrobe space. Living/dining/kitchen area all spotless. 2 rings, toaster, kettle, microwave, plenty of crockery/cutlery. Fridge. There is a supermarket @!*$ souvenir shop just at the end of the road (about 20 metres) thats sells everything from a needle to an anchor. There is also a supermarket across the road (turn left and then right). All supermarkets pretty much the same and prices same as ireland. Nothing cheap unfortununately. The apartments are right next door to the main hotel block and all guests can use the hotel facilities - laundry room, indoor pool, bars, etc. etc. We had a room on the second floor with a pool view just beside the bar. We thought it would be very noisy but not a bit of it. There was an entertainment programme for the kiddies every night and they all had a great time but this ended around 9pm. We found the drinks at the bar in the hotel very expensive however.
Our towels were changed every second day and our bed linen changed about 5 times in our two week stay. We hired the remote for the television and air conditioning for Euro 10 each and got this money back when we returned the remotes so TV and air conditioning FREE. Safe deposit boxes in the reception area for Euro 26.50 for the two weeks and well worth if for peace of mind.
The beach beside the hotel is not great. The receptionist in the apartments, Maria, was lovely and told us to go down into Protaras to Bikini Beach. It is about a 25 min walk away and too far in the heat but a taxi down costs Euro 7 and taxi rank just down the road from the apartment. There is a local bus that runs from the main road for Euro 1.35 each way but only runs once an hour so you really have to time it. We got it back at 6.30 most evenings which was grand. The sun beds on the beach cost Euro 2 each and Euro 2 for the brolly. Lovely little beach bar called Bikini Bar on the beach and great for lunch time snacks and drinks. the sand white and the water chrystal clear. Idyllic.
There are lots of little restaurants in the immediate vicinty of the apartments. Two I would recommend are Mochel, right across the road from the hotel abd Bubas, a little family run taverna (turn right out of the hotel to the end of the road, turn left and the next right and its across the junction. No street light to speak of so beware and ladies leave your stillettos at home ! Also Blue Spice is lovely. Turn left out of the hotel to the end of the road and turn right and its about 50 metres down towards the beach.
Protaras is about a 20/25 min walk away. Not too bad in the evening when it is cooler but very hot to walk during the day. there is a restaurant on the main protaras road called Anatolia and it is absolutely fabulous. the food to die for, excellent service and really cheap. Always a queue outside so go early or leave it until after 9pm when the crowd dies down a bit.
the protaras strip has all the usual souvenir shops, pubs, clubs, etc and is a bit rackety. to be honest we preferred staying up near the hotel (in an area called Pernera) as the restaurants there are lovely and it is a lot quieter if that is what u like.
The weather was very hot during our two week stay. It reach 44 degrees on the second wednesday so a trip to the beach is a must where u can take advantage of the sea breeze. We went to Fig Tree Bay one day but the sun beds are one on top of the other and not a fig tree in sight ! We stuck with Bikini Beach every day where there are lots of sun beds and space to swing a cat if you have one!
There is a "late check out" facility available at the hotel for Euro 26 until 6pm and Euro 38 until 10pm but unfortunately as the day we left was a Bank Holiday in Cyprus all the hotels were fully booked we had to be out of our apartment at 10am. There are showers available in the basement which are fine and u can also use the showers in the hotel so all in all not a big deal.
Cyprus is very expensive and although Ireland has had the Euro for the past six years we still found it expensive there - almost the same as ireland. However, I would definitely go back and have no hesitation in recommending the Tsokkos Sun Gardens Apartments to anybody. the only thing was it was a bit far away from Protaras.

Tsokkos Gardens Apartments: Ding Dong Morning Campers by Brian & Paulette Ingham |
| Posted 27 October 2006 about a visit in October 2006 | Overall rating: 4.1 |
If you like being woken in the morning to the sound of Oh What A Beatifull Morning being played over the loud speaker and if you like listening to Val Doonican and Matt Monroe etc. You may enjoy your stay here.
The rooms although of an adequate size and fairly clean were still a disappointment, iron burns on the carpet, old although clean towels, torn curtains and none too fresh bed throws do not add up to 4 stars in my opinion.
the food was basic although you could usually find something to eat. drinks at the bar after you wait in a queue for about 10 minutes were watered down and as for the evening entertainment Well my husband said he'd rather watch my nieces dancing display!!!! OK the reps do try their best but I'm sorry its just not good enough. Kiddies Disco, Bingo, Back To the Sixties dance routine not for me. What we did find was a great little bar just down the road called the Station where the service was great and the entertainment great fun, thanks to Walshy the DJ Karaoke King.
The saving grace to Cyprus was the weather and the beach at Protaras. Will we go back to the Tsokkas Gardens a definate NO.

Tsokkos Gardens Apartments: REVIEW - OCT 05 by Jim Godfrey |
| Posted 25 October 2005 about a visit in September 2005 | Overall rating: 8.0 |
Had been in the Anastasia in Jun 04 and enjoyed it. Decided to try Gardens Hotel (in same group and only 150 yards away). Was pleasantly surprised and liked the Gardens better than the Anastasia, mainly due to pool area and facilities. Food was very good and I would dare somebody not to find something they could eat. At a push there is always the kiddies section at dinner. There is also a menu available between 1500 and 1730 hrs daily which has a very nice selection of salads, omelettes, pizzas, burgers etc.
You are right next to some good local pubs and Penerna is only a 10 min stroll away. Protaras is a £5Cyp taxi ride away.
Our friends had an apartment in the same hotel and had the use of all of our facilities. They saved a fair few quid for a 40 metre stroll/
Downside of hotel was the entertainment - the programme was J Arthur Rank and do not take a room on the top floor especially between 400 and 450 as there is a mega generator above these rooms on the roof.
Definately would go back again but am trying the Constantine the Great Hotel next year.

Tsokkos Gardens Apartments: A Big Disappointment by Festa |
| Posted 21 August 2004 about a visit in March 2004 | Overall rating: 4.0 |
Having stayed at sister hotels, I was looking forward to spending Easter at the Tsokkos Gardens with my mum. We decided that we wanted to sample a little luxury as we were a little disappointed with the previous year's stay at the Pernera Beach because of the food.
On arrival at the spacious reception I was met by an unfriendly receptionist who didn't seem to think we were booked in the hotel (or maybe this was due to the fact that she could see the pickup truck that my friend had kindly used to collect us from the airport to save my mum having to travel on the transfer coach). Her manner changed slighlty when she saw a Cypriot worker say hello to me and ask how I was.
Eventually she decided yes we were staying there and gave me the room card.
We went to our room which was a little cramped and on the first floor next to the lift. Given its location it was a little noisy when the lift was working but it was convenient for my mum with her wheelchair.
There were no blankets in the room and for the first night we hardly slept because we were so cold. I was told that the night receptionist had no access to blankets so we would have to ask the next morning. I also discovered that the heating in the room wasn't working. When I was asked for a blanket the next morning I was told that we wouldn't need them as they would switch the heating on.
The cold theme seems abound - the pool was freezing cold and the food in the hotel wasn't much warmer either!
The selection of food was limited with a choice of 4 main courses per evening. All of these were well below the recommended temperature for serving food (as my food hygeine certifcate taught me). The salad bar seemed to contain the same things every night and the same can be said for the desserts which were jelly, a mousse like substance and a gateau full of sicky fake cream. You had to hold on to your plates on an evening or the plate was whisked away with the last remaining morsels.
Breakfasts were served at a similar temperature and of course meant that if you had any of the fried options then you ended up with thick layers of fat on your plate (enough to put anyone off their food!). Breakfast plates and cups were just allowed to pile up on your table. It seems that there was no happy medium when it came to collecting pots.
At this point, I must tell readers that I am anything but a fussy eater. I like my food and talking to a waiter friend in a local bar I expressed my disappointment at the food. He did tell me that I certainly wasn't the only person that had found the standard to be poor. I actually ended up having a few meals out at a nearby pub (an excellent Thai curry), a traditional restaurant (delicious mousakka ... Irene never lets me down) and a lovely lunch of quich and salad at a friends apartment.
The rooms in the hotel seemed to be cleaned in record time and staff didn't seem to bother about getting rid of the ants on the balcony (and as a result they entered the room). Having lived over there I know that any food just goes in the fridge to keep the little blighters away.
Unfortunately I can't show you a photo of the towel that was left in our room for use as a hand towel. I use better cloths on my floor. It was grey and had a hole in and lots of hanging threads. This just summed up the whole quality aspect of the hotel.
The staff in the hotel weren't as friendly as you would normally find in a hotel in the resort. These were Cypriot staff too - no Eastern Europeans which I have seen criticisms of in the Anastasia reports.
To sum up, I would not give this hotel a 2 star rating. If this is a 4 star then the Krakow guest house I stayed in a month later is a 6 star! Don't waste your money staying here.

Tsokkos Gardens Apartments: July 2002 by Carolyn Exwood |
| Posted 20 July 2002 | Overall rating: 8.0 |
We have just got back from a sun filled week at the Tsokkos Gardens.
As the last reviewer said the hotel is spotlessly clean, and the public rooms and pool area come in for special commendation.
A couple of slight niggles with it though
1. Rooms overlooking the pool are noisy at night with the outdoor entertainment which goes on until midnight every night, (however these are the lightest and brightest rooms in the hotel as they get the sun). If you like music, bingo and Karaoke they are fine otherwise, particularly with kids make sure you ask for an outside room - as there are no sea views to pay for, they should be free.
2. Dinner could be a bit of a hit and miss affair - 2 nights out of the 6 we were there were distinctly average - overcooked meat and veg.
3. The battle of the sunbeds is alive and well - there aren't enough to go round and on a couple of days, people didn't even wait for us to leave before staking their claim to the beds we were vacating - the staking out process starts before 7 every morning, despite notices from the management not to rserve beds with towels. However, their threat to remove unattended towels wasn't carried out!
However, the rooms are comfortable, bright and clean with all the facilities promised in the brochure - its worth the £1 a day charge for the use of the fridge. The food is plentiful, and if you leave the dining rooms hungry - it's your own fault, breakfast is great value.
In short it's a great family hotel, and you are welcome to use the facilies of the sister hotels round about (they are nearly all part of the Tsokkos group).

Tsokkos Gardens Apartments: tsokkos gardens, protaras by Hobley |
| Posted 25 June 2002 | Overall rating: 8.0 |
the first impression of the hotel on arrival was how clean the hotel is. we found throughout the holiday that the hotel and pool area was always maticulously clean and the accomodation was superb. the staff were always friendly and courtious. the food in the hotel was not to my liking but my wife and two children seemed to enjoy it, with chips and burger for kids before 7:30pm. if travelling with JMC you will find your rep Christine to be the most friendly and helpful rep you are ever likely to meet. she is without doubt an asset to JMC.
a ten minute walk away is pernera which is small with plenty of bars and restaurants to pass the time of an evening. twenty minutes walk away in the other direction is protaras town with again plenty of bars and restaurants and a mcdonalds.
all in all i found this holiday to be very enjoyable and good value for money. this was our second year in cyprus and we'd be quite happy to return to the island next year.
