Turunc Travel Guide: Heaven on Earth

Written by Ipek 3 on 28 Jun 2006 about a trip in Sep 2005.
Trip was for a group of friends on holiday. Ipek 3 would probably visit again.

Turunc shopping

Usual selection of Jewelery shops, tourist junk but also loads of simple 'supermarkets' that have the basic essentials and are happy to see you. Leather shops and usual 'genuine' designer goods - happy local market on Mondays which is wonderful for fresh produce (olives, cheese, eggs, tomatoes, etc.)

Turunc nightlife

There are some bars on the main street that stay open late, but there is a local restriction on opening times. If you want all night partying - go to Marmaris.

Turunc restaurants

Turkish cuisiine is superb - similar to Greek. Sadly this is disappearing as they think we want 'English' food. You can get local food if you ask for it - but you have to ask for it! I encourage you ask for Turkish food - their Rice Pudding is somethng else. Fish is expensive, but good for a treat.

Turunc attractions

Marmaris has a small Fort and a big market that are linked together and should be visited at least once. Turunc has peace and an atmosphere that is hard to beat, but also offers some lovely walks to adjacent bays.

Turunc day trips

Loads of places to visit from here - you have to do Dalyan (Turtle Beach) and some of the local bays. There's a trip to a local village which is interesting and gets you a taste of the Turkish cuisine, but you MUST do the Turkish Bath. A wonderful experience, but be prepared for practical jokes. Relaxing and cleansing in more ways than one.....

Turunc History and Culture

Been going to Turunc for 15 years and it hasn't altered dramatically in feel, although the last few years have seen (sadly) a building frenzy. The local business people remain and I hope that it will find it's level again, as usual.

The sea is clear, clean and safe, although it does have a shelf to watch out for. The beach is shingle with some interesting rocks for snorkeling around at one end of the bay.

Fundamentally, it's a quiet place to relax with enough going on to stop you getting bored - but it's not rockin' all night and nobody wants that. You want 24/7 action, then go to Marmaris.

Getting to Turunc

9.0
We get a flight to Dalaman and then organise a taxi from Turunc to meet us (whatever the time) and take us on - for about £80 return.

Getting around Turunc

The local dolmus (car or boat) takes you across the bay to Marmaris and from there you can get buses anywhere. The bus service across Turkey is superb, cheap and on time, but can take a long time - it's a big place! Everyone is so helpful at the bus stations, and the local snacks available are welcome. A good way to travel - take lots of water (although you get freebies on the bus, it may not be enough in summer).

Taxis need to be checked before you get in to avoid an argument at the other end, but are not that bad a price.

When to visit Turunc

Obviously HOT in August - May is like a hot Spring in UK and September is warm and mellow. Both ends of the season are prone to the odd stormy day, but doesn't last for long.
