| Turunc Review: | | Written by Jeff Baird on 08 Sep 2004 about a trip in Jul 2004.
| Turunc is a large village and very beautiful. The people are very friendly and don’t really hassle you like they do in Marmaris. There are numerous taverners offering more or less the same menu at about the same price. Most give you free pitta bread and garlic butter to start. In addition Musti (main street) will also offer you a free alcoholic drink and coffee etc after your meal. The Special menu at Korfez (beach) is outstanding. The Ottoman Treasure Basket and the Kleftike are meals you will remember with relish. The place itself is slightly up market but not expensive.
You can go to Marmaris (which is enormous and characterless) on the bus for 3m(1.20) or the taxi boat for 5m(2.00). If you go to the market or the Bazaar go in the morning when its busy and the stallholders have less time to hassle you. The market offers fake designer goods – 25 socks for 27m(10.00), leather (‘Gucci’) handbags 20m (8.00). ‘Quicksilver’ tea shirts 3 for 27m(10.00), beach towels 27m(10.00) for 2, ‘Levi’ 501’s 20m (8.00) etc. These are guide prices, which can be beaten by haggling! Take Sterling or Euros for the Markets and you will get a slightly better deal. Icmeler is smaller than Marmaris but bigger than Turunc and still quite busy. The bus (3m = 1.20) from Turunc drops you off at the market, which is about 20 minutes from the harbor. The Icmeler taxi boats don’t like this so charge 10m (4.00) return from Turunc but 7.5m (3.00) Icmeler to Turunc. There are a couple of other small bays, which can be visited for a day from Turunc harbor. The taxi boats (10m = 4.00 return) leave at 10.30am and return at about 5pm. The closest, Amos Bay is about an hours walk from Turunc but the walk is a ‘killer’ so you’ll be glad to get the taxi boat back! Both bays have taverners, which offer free sun beds, drinks and meals rather than snacks.
Go to Turunc and enjoy but don’t go between June and early September because it’s unbearably hot and sticky peak season. |
