Imerovigli view

View from our balcony

We also stayed in room 6, although a year later. On arrival in Immerovigli ( a mere 15 mins transfer from the airport) we were met and greeted by Chris who carried our cases to the houses for us (here is a clue, the name is "Ouranos Traditional Houses" ie they are built into the side of the Caldera). We were warmly greeted by the manager Dora and told everything we needed to know about the facilities and so on.

We had a small private balcony with a table and chairs where we could sit out and eat lunch / have a glass of wine and this had a spectacular view. There was also a sunning area adjacent to the covered jacuzzi with mats provided or a large terrace for all the guests to enjoy just one level down, this had sun loungers and tables and chairs.

On the first day our toilet sprung a leak and it was fixed with minimum hassle, a simple phonecall to reception had Chris at our door to fix it immediately.

Breakfasts were served from the main coffee area although you could have them on your balcony and we were surprised to find that the majority of pastrys and cakes were made by Dora!

The rooms are cave like - this was the attraction for us - although we had plenty of space, there was a slightly damp smell to the room but being on the side of a cliff in a very humid environment we accepted it as one of those things - you cant have everything! We did mention this to Dora and she arranged for our sheets etc to be changed more often to try and limit this. Our room was cleaned to perfection every day and all of the staff were friendly and helpful.

In my opinion this area is the best to stay in Santorini, you are in close proximity to most things and Fira is a 20 min walk away on a picturesque walk.

If you are after a beach holiday go to Kamari or Perissa (we did day trips to both on the bus for 1.10 euros) but if you want a picturesque postcard holiday go to the Caldera. Likewise if you are after a hotel in the traditional sense, dont book traditional houses!

We wanted a quiet romantic holiday away from the touristy bustle and tourist traps, we got a it in bundles and with a fantastic view!

Uranos: Ouranous traditional houses Imergrovigili by Susan Dardis
Posted 11 August 2005 about a visit in July 2005
Stayed at the Ouranous from 26/7/05 to 9/8/05, stayed in apartment number 6 self catering, this holiday was to celebrate our silver wedding, on arrival at the airport we were to say a little surprised having never visited Greece before , but we were assured that the very laid back attitude was normal. The Plane from Manchester contained 148 passengers a 146 not staying where we were, did somebody know someting we didnt. A small mini bus took us from the airport to the resort, a young hungarian (we learnt this later) met us and carried our extremley heavey cases to the apartment, down several flights of small stone steps, the apartment was a CAVE on first glance a novelty, after 2 weeks you go stir crazy for space, which can only be found outside, the veiw however was breathtaking, just like all the photos and pictures we had looked at. Then there was the awful smell that came during the night, that bad it woke us up, we complained on several occasssions and were told, we were holidaying on a volcano what did we expect, we tried to ask other holiday makers but as we were the only english it was a little difficult to understand each other, we did find a couple of Greeks who had been moved to another apartment due to the smell. There are a total of 8 tavernas and 3 supermarkets, selling papers and magazines a month out of date. Best value for money meals were eaten at Anestis, he even does takeaway greek style. Bus ride to Oia a greek tragedy waiting to happen, just piled everybody on regardless.
All in all I would say the weather brilliant, veiws breathtaking, but if you really want to visit Santorini do as Oscar Wilde and see before you die but only stay for a week, and if you want more night life then a greek village stay in Kamari it has a beach. The photo showed here is the veiw from the terrace next to ours , ours was a little smaller to say the least, but we did have to share loungers with the 4 people in the next apartment, if they went out great but if we stayed to catch the sun we were on chairs, not good if you want to relax, or jus fly and flop- you cant flop in a chair, I'll never take my own things for granted again, oh for a comfy bed and a soft pillow. Needless to say we wont be visiting the beautiful island of Santorini again. One last thing english manners dont matter here, just push people out of the way it seemes to work for other nationalities.
