Villa Mabapa: Book Direct with Hotel by Jill Rowe |
| Posted 25 August 2005 about a visit in July 2005 | Overall rating: 8.3 |
We decided to take a last minute breakaway and not wanting to be over powered by children during the height of summer I chose this hotel because of its location so we could take advantage of making this a twin holiday giving sightseeing in Venice and relaxation time on the Lido beach, which I can highly recommend.
The Hotel Mabapa was a 10 minute walk from the beach and the waterbus stop, as we are quite fit this did not present any problem and added to the whole experience. The hotel was beautifully furnished and had a lovely garden and an outside bar area facing across the causeway to Venice which lends to spectacular views of all incoming cruise liners.
Unfortunately we booked this hotel on the internet through a third party and not direct with the hotel. On checking availibility about 10 days prioir to our travel the hotel direct system was not showing any availibility, but we were able to reserve a room through a third party.
We arrived at the hotel only to find that the room we had reserved did not include breakfast as we presumed we had arranged - although the reservations manager was very helpful in explaining the third party we had booked through only offers room rates not BB and he should know because he is the contracts manager, and has a contract to retain certain rooms for the sole use of these particular guests, such as ourselves.
We overcome this small disappointment and went off to our allocated double room, which was clean and decorated beautiful but it had a very stale musty smell and was extremly dark. We complained about the room and asked to be moved to another room but were told that the hotel was full. The longer the air conditioning was on the worst the smell became and the next day we complained again. We were then told that it was because this room was a annexe ground floor garden room and due to the water in the area other than spraying the carpets and furnishings in the room there was little they could do.
On the third day of our six night stay after continuing to complain we were shown the only room which they stated was availiable. This room was on the third level and in the main building not in an adjoining annexe, the room was so different bright, not musty more of a 4star quality, but it contained twin beds set at opposite ends of a very narrow bedroom, making it impossible to join the beds together, so we had to decline the move.
We enjoyed our stay inspite of the musty room and the added expense of breakfast which was very well presented with hams, scrambled eggs, pastries, cereals, juices etc. Although we felt that because we were not Italian and had not made the booking direct with the hotel we did not get the service or hospitality as our fellow guests. Guests arrived and left mostly only staying for a few nights, we feel we could have been accomodated in a more appropriate room if only because we had a longer stay than others.
The dining experience was expensive but the peaceful location was a dream!
The Lido is Venice's best kept secret and the Italians want to keep it to themselves, but I don't blame them, it is a lovely isle and we shall return, but not to the Mabapa Hotel. If you want to experience the Vencie lido then do as the Italians do, and rent an apartment - the supermarkets are brill! Then you can afford to splash out on a meal at the Mabapa Hotel one evening!
