Villa Romana: Hotel Exellente by Danny Carr |
| Posted 15 October 2004 about a visit in June 2004 | Overall rating: 9.0 |
I went to Salou in July 2004 with my girlfriend. The Hotel Vil. La Romana is by far and above the best hotel I have ever stayed in. First impressions of the hotel from the outside were excellent, it all looked so new and fresh. Check in was fast and painless, and once up to the room I was beyond impressed. The room was spacious, well presented and very clean. The only gripe I would have about it is that i was expecting a double bed and the "twin bed" were two single beds pushed together! The choice of channels on the TV was rather poor, with the only English language channels being BBC World Service and Eurosport. There is a handy mini-bar fridge for storing suncream and beverages in (it just about fits in two 2L bottles of water and a few beers) it also has an ice box with and ice-cube tray. Air con was a blessing I must say, in fact it worked a bit TOO well as in the morning the room was like a fridge and the air was very dry as it had removed all the moisture from it! If you want to use the air con however, the balcony door must be shut or it won't work. Bathroom was very nice, came with complimentary toiletries, plenty of towels and toilet rolls, water pressure was fantastic especially the hot water, it was like having a power shower! Maids came every day with fresh towels and linen.
If you need bottled water then there is a vending machine in the basement, on our first morning, I made the mistake of trundling off into town to find a supermarket for some water because I didn't know about the vending machine! The food in the restaurant is decent enough, however it does get a bit repetitive, serving the same things over and over again, but in different combinations. There is a grill area which cooks the food for you as you watch, there was a selection of steaks, chump steaks, chicken and fish to choose for the evening meal, for breakfast freshly fried eggs were available. I have to say though, that the breakfast was rather poor, there was a full english available but the the saussages were frankfurters, the bacon was nasty Spanish bacon which tastes nothing like English bacon and the scrambled eggs were not up to scratch at all.
There are two pools, an indoor pool and an outdoor pool, the indoor pool, we did not venture into, mainly because you are obliged to wear a rediculous blue bathing cap. The indoor pool has a main pool, two jaccuzis, sauna and stean room. Adjacent to the indoor pool is a fully equipped gym. The outdoor pool is fantastic, it is a freeform pool with an island and two bridges over it, it has a shallower end with a children's pool and a deeper end which you can just about keep your head out of the water in! There are plenty of sun loungers lying around, even with the ammount of Germans and Scandics staying at the hotel there are enough to go round, even if you do meander down to the pool at 2 in the afternoon! Poolside snack bar is great, serving a range of pizzas, baguettes and toasties.
Salou itself is a most diverse resort, it caters for everyone, from young couples and gangs of lads/girls to families and older people. There is something for everyone here. The beach is a blue flag beach, and one of the cleanest beaches I have ever been on, there are various watersports to try your hand at in addition to plenty of sun loungers and snack bar facilities. In the town centre there are lots of shops and restaurants.
The nightlife in Salou is superb, and by far the best bar to go to for an evening out is Danny Boy's, an Irish pub which does THE BEST steak and Guinness pie ever!
Next door to Danny Boy's is Bus Stop, and next to that is 007's, behind those on a back street is Piccadilly's bar, all are younger places to go to. There is a big nightclub to go to called Snoopy's which is located down a back-street, open till very early in the morning, €5 entry per person and they give you a free drink! There is an R&B nightclub called Kiss also located down a back-street, and they don't like Germans there! Great!
Port Aventura Theme Park and Costa Caribe Water Park are both excellent. Port Aventura has a diverse selection of rides for adults and children alike. The mighty Dragon Khan rollercoaster is by far and above one of the best I have ever ridden, and there are hardly any queues, even in peak season. Costa Caribe waterpark has a wave pool, lazy rapids and a plethora of different slides to go on. I would advise purchasing a 7day pass to Port Aventura as you get one day of the seven at Costa Caribe included. If you go to eihter once, you will want to go again, no doubt about it. Costa Caribe has some hidden charges though... It costs €2 for a locker and €3 for an inflatable ringo or €4 for a double or "figure 8" sized inflatable plus a €5 refundable deposit per inflatable, these are needed to go on some slides, and in the rapids.
Overall I enjoyed the holiday immensely, 7 days however, is just not enough to experience everything, so i would definately reccomend going for a fortnight. I wish I had now. efinately be returning to Salou in the future and maybe going back to the Vil. La Romana too.
