Viva Mallorca: Good for Families if you are all Inclusive by Largeloins |
| Posted 10 October 2005 about a visit in August 2005 | Overall rating: 5.5 |
It’s run exclusively by First Choice Holidays as an All inclusive or Self Catering resort. The apartments basic with balconies, cleaned 5 times per week. The “Galley Kitchenette” is very small and poorly equipped with no storage space for anything other than the pots, pans and crockery. You do however get a kettle, toaster and microwave. There is very little room around the small table to get four, even then we had to bring the fourth chair from the dressing table in the bedroom. Other times we ate on the plastic furniture on the balcony which is still a tight squeeze.
CORRECTION TO MAIN DESCRIPTION there are five blocks each with THREE floors. GET AN APARTMENT ON THE TOP FLOOR otherwise the noise of the family above will drive you mad especially the inevitable and unavoidable wooden chair movement also “high heels” across the floor. The soundproofing in general is poor as you can hear everything loader than conversation volume level especially babies crying.
The pools are slightly saline of which there are three. There is one tiny baby pool which is about 3 metres (10 feet) diameter and 0.3 metres (1 foot) deep. We went 13th to 27th September so there were a lot of babies and under 5’s, therefore this pool was packed and had a thick film of sun cream on it. The largest pool is 1.2 metres deep were most families were. The third pool is about 1.8 metres deep and attracted less children - to be replaced by the “big kids” or lads on holiday it is also used for water polo every day.
We were self-catering and found the on site restaurants to be OK on the two occasions we ate there. There was your typical “Spanish holiday buffet” and a Carribean a'la carte. The buffet cost was 18.50 euros per adult, half price for a child – not cheap although unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks were included. The drinks at the bars were for example 3.50 euros for a Gin and Tonic, but 1.6 euros for 200ml of sprite or coke which is a small glass for about £1.10.
The complex gets it’s four stars for all it's amenities (not the service) of which there are lots including an indoor swimming pool which is unheated therefore freezing. There is plenty to keep the children occupied during the day. IT’S BASICALLY A HOLIDAY CAMP IN THE SUN so expect the entertainment to be on that kind of level.
The resort of C’an Picaort has a nice promenade, but as Robin Forster says it’s a bit of a trek to the beach. I found rest of the resort generally disappointing it’s 70% German and great if you want a pizza or pasta. There are very few Spanish restaurants serving Spanish food. There are also the usual British pubs which are fine if you want chips and football every night – because that’s all they do
If you go self catering avoid the little supermarkets on complex or around the resort as they are a rip off. The is a large Tesco equivalent quite close and hugely cheaper. To get there turn right out of reception, cross the road, go through the little park area, when you get to the dual carriageway turn right and the Supermarket s about 400 metres along right next to the Repsol Petrol Station. It has a great selection of fresh fish and meats.
We found the reception staff to be much much more helpful and accommodating than the First Choice Staff – who were only interested in your money. An example being we asked about a hire car from the reps which worked out to be about 75euros for a day with one days notice. The receptionist rang around the local companies for us and got one with no notice for 40 euros delivered and collected.
