| Yalikavak Review: Yalikavak Food and Drink - some options | | Written by Karina Martin on 27 Jun 2005 about a trip in May 2005.
| We stayed at the Mercan Story Apartments (pronounced Merjan) which were attached to the Pirates Bar and Restaurant directly overlooking the beach and lovely sunsets. Pirates restaurant looks fairly low key but has delicious food, freshly cooked; if they don't have something they will make it for you with a little advance notice. They do regular barbeques meat or fish with set price menus which are good value. Selguk and Akif (pronounced Achiff) run the restaurant and don't speak much english but they laugh alot and try to communicate. You can spend the day on the beach and have drinks and/or food brought over to you.
The bar is a great place to have aperatifs and nightcaps, with a good atmosphere and a dog called Arab. Yunus the owner and his brother Kerim who runs the bar, do everything they can to make you enjoy your time there, but not in an obtrusive way. They recently emplyoyed a door person (Halil) to entice passing folk in, and for once I agree that they should, so that others can enjoy their hospitality.
Finally, a restaurant next to Musti's on the western side, called Zeus, is often overlooked in favour of its' busy neighbour. We wondered if there was something wrong with it, but after trying it out with some trepidation, we can report that the food was really good, especially the Meze selection we started with. The head waiter there called Ahmed, was resigned to Zeus existing in the shadow of Musti's, but we urge you not to be put off by the empty tables - go in and enjoy the food. Ahmed is convinced he needs an English or Western wife to draw in the crowds - but if you get to try the food and recommend the restaurant this drastic measure should not be necessary! |
