Zorbas: Nice & clean, but out of the way by Gordon Hammond |
| Posted 30 June 2009 about a visit in June 2009 | Overall rating: 7.4 |
Zorbas Beach Hotel is about 20 mins (or a mile) walk from the town of Tingaki, along a deserted & unlit narrow coastal road (although street lights are being installed this summer by the looks of things). So it's either a 2-3 foot drop onto the rocks & sand one side, or falling into the cable trenches the other side if you fancy an evening stroll. There is a fairly regular bus into town (1.40 euro one-way), with a stop outside the hotel, or about 5-6 euro's for a taxi. The beach is opposite the main hotel entrance, just across the normally quite seafront road.
Sunbed hire on the beach is about 3 euro a day - even for All-Inclusive guests - & it can get quite breezy. No sign of any beach vendors in this part though (probably too far out of town). A certain amount of seaweed at the waters edge, & a bit of an undersea shelf close to shore, but fairly ok once past that point.
The Hotel itself is spotlessly clean throughout, and well appointed in the reception furnishing. The rumble of the army of the cleaning carts begins around 7am, as they thunder along the crazy-paved walkways. Our room (714) was more than big enough for the two of us, with a comfy double bed and another single that could be sectioned off by the built-in room divider. Plenty of wardrobe & drawer space, although storage of larger suitcases could be a problem as they won't fit under the beds. Fridge & kettle worked well, but "satellite TV" only had one English-speaking channel (BBC News 24) in contrast to the 2 French, 6 German, & 6 Greek channels (I can accept the Greek ones, it's their Country!). Bathroom well equipped (with good hair dryer !), again with ample storage space, and both curtain & wall bracket for shower head. Shower worked well (after initial de-scaling) and there was always plenty of hot water. Aircon worked well too, & was quiet enough to leave on throughout the night, but will switch off when the patio doors are opened. The electric supply works via the rooms key fob, with a couple of minutes time delay built in, so you can't leave it running while you're out (fridge isn't affected though).
The Hotel staff are all polite & efficient, but with a few exceptions they all appeared to be bored with their jobs (Not the reception staff, Christos in the bar, Ola in the restaurant, the cleaners, & even Hannah at the pool bar !).
In the restaurant (breakfast 'till 11am !!) the food quality is okay, and so is the quantity, although we were dissapointed not to have more Greek dishes on offer (Even a Greek themed night had limited local dishes). The bar uses post-mix dispensers for it's soft drinks, so after the intial 5 second fizz your Cola, Tonic, or Lemonade is lifeless.
There's a small on-site shop selling most of your basic requirements (water, cola, etc), along with a reasonably equipped Gym to burn of those calories. Your pool towels are issued on arrival, and can be exchanged daily if required. We had no problems with sunbeds around the pool during our 2-week stay, nor with any of the other nationalities staying there. The main pool is a reasonable size, with depth from around 0.5Mtr at one end to 1.8Mtr at the other. There's a small jaccuzi section, & a seperate toddler pool (less than 0.5Mtr depth). Can be quite chilly 1st thing in morning, but nice by mid afternoon. The swim-up bar was out of use while we were there, but the pool bar opposite coped pretty well. The smaller pool overlooking the beach is much quieter & offers soom lovely sunset views.
If you're taking pre-teen children, the Chicco & his Animation Team do a pretty good job of keeping them occupied from about 10am to 10pm (with a few hours break in the afternoon). For older children & adults, there's nothing else to do here but relax. Even the evening "entertainment" consists of Chicco & his team doing poor Madonna or Tina Turner acts, or encouraging audience participation in "its-a-knockout" style games. No authentic or live local music or dance, or guest slots for outside entertainers, and nothing past about 11pm, so going into Tingaki for the evening is a must.
Tingaki town has a decent selection of bars & restaurants, from traditional Greek to Chinese foods, & traditional UK beers. There's also a selection of tourist shops, vehicle/cycle hire outlets, & even a cashpoint machine for those emergency moments !! To summarise, knowing what we know now, we'd probably stay here again, but bring our own evening entertainment or hire some wheels for the duration, unless they improve on their evening programme.
